Julie Semoroz est une artiste franco-suisse qui vit et travaille à Genève. Sa pratique interdisciplinaire explore les liens entre art, science et perception à travers le son. Créatrice d’installations immersives et de performances expérimentales, elle s’intéresse aux phénomènes de résonance, à l’intéroception, aux vocalisations humaines et animales, ainsi qu’aux relations entre corps, environnement et cognition. Nourri par des collaborations avec des chercheurs en neurosciences, biologie et sciences sociales, son travail questionne les connexions qui façonnent notre rapport au vivant. Lauréate de plusieurs distinctions et bourses, elle présente régulièrement ses œuvres en Suisse et à l’international. 

Œuvres

Pour cette exposition, Julie Semoroz présente cinq œuvres qui explorent la communication, la résonance et la mémoire du vivant. 

In Between, installation immersive mêlant son, photographie, lumière et recherche scientifique, explore les phénomènes de synchronisation et désynchronisation entre humains, animaux et environnements.  

Ping Pong et HCI – Human Cetaceans Interaction (2023), installation participative associant une table de ping-pong et une pièce sonore, s’inspire d’une expérience menée en Norvège avec le chercheur Jörg Rychen, de l’Institut de neuroinformatique de l’ETH (Zürich), auprès des orques et des baleines à bosse. Sans chercher à “parler” leur langage, Julie Semoroz explore une interaction fondée sur l’écoute, l’imitation et la réciprocité. 

Ettol est une série photographique réalisée par Julie Semoroz et Michael Cordey à partir de structures organiques, telles que la peau, les plantes et le bois, associées à des images de neurones issues de recherches menées avec Didier Grandjean au CISA (Centre Interfacultaire en Sciences Affectives de l’Université de Genève) et au Wyss Center (Campus Biotech, GE). En croisant matière vivante et imagerie scientifique, l’œuvre révèle les correspondances entre les formes du vivant et les réseaux de connexion qui traversent les corps, les organismes et les écosystèmes. 

Sérigraphies douze mille vingt est un triptyque de sérigraphies réalisé à partir de planches de bois d’arolle modifiées, dont les formes évoquent visuellement des ondes musicales. 

The Living Committee, installation sonore, vidéo et performance, rassemble voix, sons environnementauxtransformés, récits et recherches scientifiques dans un espace de dialogue entre humains et non-humains. Nomade et collaboratif, le projet se réinvente à chaque activation et interroge l’écologie, la communication interespèces et notre place au sein du vivant. 

Ice Cave Sing Me a Song est un diptyque vidéo inspiré d’une rencontre sensible avec une grotte de glace en disparition. L’œuvre imagine la voix d’un glacier confronté à sa disparition sous l’effet du réchauffement climatique. Entre fragilité, mémoire et transformation, elle évoque les résonances entre les corps humains et les mondes naturels. Cette oeuvre est pensée comme un pont avec Spongia Vocalis. 

Spongia Vocalis est une installation sonore composée d’éponges marines imprimées en 3D, chacune diffusant une identité sonore issue de données scientifiques. Réalisée en collaboration avec l'équipe de Thierry Pérez, Directeur de Recherche au CNRS à l'Institut Méditerranéen de Biodiversité et d'Écologie marine (IMBE), Station Marine d'Endoume (Aix-Marseille Université), l’œuvre transforme les données métabolomiques de huit espèces d’éponges en paysages sonores distincts. Longtemps perçues comme silencieuses et immobiles, ces formes de vie, apparues il y a plus de 600 millions d’années, deviennent ici les protagonistes d’un chœur vivant.

Biography 

Julie Semoroz is a Swiss-French artist who lives and works in Geneva. Her interdisciplinary practice explores the links between art, science, and perception through sound. Creator of immersive installations and experimental performances, she is interested in phenomena of resonance, interoception, human and animal vocalizations, as well as the relationships between body, environment, and cognition. Nourished by collaborations with researchers in neuroscience, biology, and social sciences, her work questions the connections that shape our relationship to the living world. A recipient of several awards and grants, she regularly presents her work in Switzerland and internationally. 

Works 

For this exhibition, Julie Semoroz presents five works that explore communication, resonance, and the memory of living beings. 

In Between, an immersive installation combining sound, photography, light, and scientific research, explores phenomena of synchronization and desynchronization between humans, animals, and environments. 
Ping Pong et HCI – Human Cetaceans Interaction (2023), a participatory installation combining a ping-pong table and a sound piece, draws on an experiment conducted in Norway with researcher Jörg Rychen, of the Institute of Neuroinformatics at ETH (Zürich), involving orcas and humpback whales. Without seeking to "speak" their language, Julie Semoroz explores an interaction based on listening, imitation, and reciprocity. 
Ettol is a photographic series created by Julie Semoroz and Michael Cordey from organic structures — such as skin, plants, and wood — combined with images of neurons drawn from research conducted with Didier Grandjean at CISA (Centre Interfacultaire en Sciences Affectives, University of Geneva) and at the Wyss Center (Campus Biotech). By bringing together living matter and scientific imagery, the work reveals the correspondences between the forms of living beings and the networks of connection that run through bodies, organisms, and ecosystems. 

Sérigraphies douze mille vingt is a triptych of screen prints made from modified Swiss stone pine wood panels, whose forms visually evoke sound waves. 

The Living Committee, a sound, video, and performance installation, brings together voices, transformed environmental sounds, narratives, and scientific research within a space of dialogue between humans and non-humans. Nomadic and collaborative, the project reinvents itself with each activation and questions ecology, interspecies communication, and our place within the living world. 
Ice Cave Sing Me a Song is a video diptych inspired by a felt encounter with a disappearing ice cave. The work imagines the voice of a glacier confronting its own disappearance under the effect of global warming. Between fragility, memory, and transformation, it evokes the resonances between human bodies and the natural world. This work is conceived as a bridge to Spongia Vocalis. 
Spongia Vocalis is a sound installation composed of 3D-printed marine sponges, each broadcasting a sonic identity derived from scientific data. Created in collaboration with the team of Thierry Pérez, Research Director at the CNRS, Mediterranean Institute of Marine and Continental Biodiversity and Ecology (IMBE), Station Marine d'Endoume (Aix-Marseille Université), the work transforms the metabolomic data of eight sponge species into distinct soundscapes. Long perceived as silent and immobile, these life forms, which appeared more than 600 million years ago, here become the protagonists of a living choir.
