2026 – NOISE BRAIN VISCERAL COUPLING: Trio for Percussion and Electronics

Julie Semoroz, musician, performer, and visual artist, explores the connections between sound, body, and perception in her creations. Her new work, NOISE BRAIN VISCERAL COUPLING, is a composition for three performers, blending percussion, electronics, lights, and movement.

For this new creation, she presents a 30-minute piece for three performers, where percussion—a new element in her artistic language—interacts with light sensors, electronic devices, and the musicians’ movements.

This piece questions notions of neural, human, and social synchronization and desynchronization, drawing inspiration from scientific research on interoception and the internal rhythms that influence our emotions and shape our perceptions of the world. It follows a transdisciplinary approach, where artistic creation and scientific research closely interact.

Enriched by collaborations with the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences (CISA) and researchers such as Didier Grandjean, this work offers a listening experience that resonates with the expectations, connections, and networks that link us to the living world.

Célébrons ensemble le 1.000.063ème anniversaire de l'art!

Cette année encore, nous honorons l'héritage de Robert Filliou. L'artiste français du mouvement Fluxus avait proclamé en 1963 que l'art fêtait son millionième anniversaire. Depuis, chaque 17 janvier, nous offrons un cadeau à l'art.

Le Studio 15 de RTS à Lausanne vibrera aux sons des voix pour cet anniversaire, pour lui offrir des tonalités poignantes, déchirantes et enchantées. La vocaliste égyptienne Aya Metwalli, la micro chorale poétique et absurde Alice, la voix douce, à la fois folk et médiévale de Michaëlle Grebil et les explorations sonores débridée de l’artiste sonore Julie Semoroz en duo avec Yi-Ping Yang.

Cette soirée s'inscrit dans une célébration mondiale. Des équipes de producteurs à travers l'Europe et au-delà, dont celle de L’Echo des Pavanes de RTS Espace 2, participent à ce festival radio d'une journée. Chacun offre son "cadeau d'anniversaire" : concerts, performances, créations acoustiques diffusées sur le réseau Euroradio.

The session will be dedicated to sound-based works that explore communication beyond the human-across species, systems, and technologies. From plant signalling and animal calls to machine perception and speculative ecologies, we seek works that re/imagine how we listen, connect, and relate.

At this occasion, you will listen this piece called HCI - HUMAN CETACEANS INTERACTION.

On the site of a pilot experiment off Skjervoy, Norway, in December 2021, Jörg Rychen, a scientist at the Institute of Neuroinfomatics at ETH Zurich, has invited sound artist and performer Julie Semoroz to try and interact with killer whales and humpback whales by imitating their sounds and matching the rhythm of their vocalisations. The aim is to make them understand that our sounds are not random, but are a reaction to their sounds. Exchanging with  wild animals with sounds and music can trigger emotions and reveal a  universal communication.  When interacting with non-humans, we are forced to change our point  of view, to try and see things from the perspective of the animals in  which we are communicating. In doing such an experiment, it is possible  to actually build a relationship and a bond, not uniquely test animal  reactions or decode their language capacity in their natural  environment. HCI is a sound composition freely inspired by the artist.

NEURAL NOISE 1 is a musical work by Julie Semoroz exploring the link between neuroscience and music, in which percussion, light and voice symbolise neuronal interactions. Drawing on principles such as expectation, learning and inter-frequency coupling, this composition translates the complexity of the brain into sound and light. Through rhythmic and sonic textures inspired by neuronal oscillations, it invites each listener to question his or her own perception.

Pour cette soirée du 8 mars 2025, Julie Semoroz invite l’artiste visuelle Sophie Le Meillour avec qui elle collabore depuis de nombreuses années notamment dans les projet NUT NUT et ASTRA.

MYELINE est une composition qui explore les propriétés des neurones et de la myéline, la substance qui améliore la vitesse et l'efficacité de la transmission des signaux nerveux. La pièce utilise le son comme support pour questionner la façon dont les individus perçoivent leur environnement, leurs relations et leur place dans un monde interconnecté. Elle combine musique électronique expérimentale, vocalisations humaines, données d’EEG provenant du CISA Université de Genève, mouvements corporels et recherche interdisciplinaire en art et en science. La composition a été jouée au niveau international, dans des pays tels que la Suisse, la France, l'Allemagne, le Portugal, la Colombie, Macao, Hong Kong, la Chine, Taïwan et le Japon. Chaque représentation est une expérience unique, invitant le public à s'engager avec sa voix intérieure et son corps, en utilisant le son et la lumière pour explorer les processus de transmission de l’information dans les systèmes de type neuronal au sein du monde vivant.

Julie Semoroz invites us to explore synchrony and desynchrony, whether neuronal, human or social. In the Living Committee workshop, participants are invited to explore their own inner voice and body, and to represent an element of the living. Using their own sound devices, their bodies and simple materials such as paper, we build a collective proposition in which individuals and collective ideas are engaged. In relation to themselves and to each other, the participants construct an original composition to talk about collective action and political practices in the human and non-human world.
